Gioconda dots white silver, by Japanese artist Tomoko Nagao, is a reinterpretation in Pop and Superflat key of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece “Gioconda”, now on display at the Louvre. One of the fundamental characteristics of Tomoko’s reinterpretations is that the subjects, taken from ancient art, are for her viewers true icons, known throughout the world. Here then is her personal version of one of the most famous female characters in art history.
What makes the work absolutely contemporary is the technique used: Spray Art and Stencil on canvas. This particular technique of street art overcomes the American graffiti, ensuring high quality works through the use of stencils (carved and processed masks) and spray cans. All seasoned with the kawaii aesthetic, characteristic of all the artist’s artworks.
